Travel Recommendations
Public Transportation is a perfect way to visit Edgartown and the Martha's Vineyard
Museum. There are VTA buses that run from both ferry terminals (Vineyard Haven
and Oak Bluffs). You can purchase your bus tickets from the driver. Free bus maps
and schedules are also available on the bus. From the Vineyard Haven Ferry Terminal,
you can take either Bus #1 (Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road) or Bus #13 (Edgartown,
Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven) to travel to Edgartown. From the Oak Bluffs Ferry
Terminal, you need to take Bus #13 to reach Edgartown. Both buses stop at the
VTA Church Street bus stop. The MVM is only two blocks from the VTA bus stop and
visitor center. To reach the MVM campus, you will need to walk to Main Street
from the bus stop. You will then need to cross the street and turn right onto
School Street. From there, you will need to walk two blocks to reach the MVM campus.
We are located at the corner of School and Cooke Streets. Traveling
by Car: Driving to Edgartown is also an option for individuals planning
to visit the Martha's Vineyard Museum. We recommend that you obtain a map of the
Island to determine the most direct route to Edgartown and the MVM. There is free
one hour parking on School Street during the summer season. Drivers can also find
limited parking on and around Main Street. However, to avoid the congestion of
Main Street, we do recommend parking at the Edgartown "Triangle" Parking
Lot. The parking lot is off the Vineyard Haven-Edgartown Road as you enter Edgartown.
You can park your car at the free lot. You can then choose to either walk to the
Historic District or take the free shuttle bus. Traveling by Bicycle:
For visitors traveling by bicycle, the Vineyard has several well marked
bicycle paths that start at the ferry terminals in Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven.
These scenic paths offer glimpses of beaches, ponds and marshes, historic homes,
woods, and Island agriculture. The two bicycle paths from Vineyard Haven and Oak
Bluffs guide riders directly to the Historic District of Edgartown. We recommend
that you lock your bicycle at one of the numerous bike stands near the VTA Church
Street Bus Stop and walk through town. If you choose to ride your bike directly
to the MVM, you can bring your bike onto the campus and lock it up.
